I was lucky enough to spend this past weekend photographing the World Savvy Annual Festival at Augsburg College. World Savvy is a national education non-profit that helps students develop global competence skills, including critical thinking, teamwork and collaboration, media literacy and research and presentation. The festival featured the work of more than 2,000 Minnesota students, exploring the theme, “Population and Progress.” The weekend kicked off Friday night with the Media and Arts Showcase, which featured student art projects, live performances and film screenings. On Saturday, the World Savvy Challenge featured student performances, documentaries, websites, action roundtables, exhibits and workshops. Speakers included U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, Dana Mortenson, World Savvy executive director, and Daniel Wordsworth, president and CEO of the American Refugee Committee.
It was fun to cover an event as a freelancer that was very similar to my work as a photojournalist. I enjoyed being around a diverse group of young people enthusiastically developing ideas to improve their communities and the world at large. I hope I was able to visually capture the same spirit on display by the students participating in the program.
